About the Publication

The Mourning Lamp

A quarterly literary publication carrying a light into the darker rooms of human experience.

Why We Exist

For the poems that linger.

The Mourning Lamp is a quarterly literary publication devoted to strange, Gothic, supernatural, uncanny, melancholic, macabre, and darkly beautiful poetry.

We are drawn to work that dwells for a while with mortality, grief, memory, mystery, faith, doubt, spiritual longing, fear, beauty, and the uneasy border between the ordinary and the unseen.

Darkness here is not an end in itself. We value atmosphere over spectacle, emotional resonance over shock, and poetry that leaves something behind after the final line.

Our Editorial Spirit

Suggestion over spectacle.

The strongest dark poetry does not always explain what waits at the edge of the room. Sometimes it allows the shadow to remain a shadow.

We welcome poems that wrestle with faith as readily as doubt, with the supernatural as readily as memory, and with unanswered questions without demanding that every mystery be resolved.

The Work Before the Name

A place for voices waiting in the dark.

The Mourning Lamp exists in part to discover and elevate remarkable voices that might otherwise go unheard. A writer does not need an established publication history, academic credentials, an MFA, a large audience, or literary connections to be taken seriously here.

Our guiding principle is simple: we read the poem before we read your name.

Initial editorial review is blind so that the work itself remains at the center of the decision. Established poets and first-time writers enter the room by the same door.

The Publication

Quarterly issues. Complete editions.

Each issue of The Mourning Lamp is conceived as a complete literary object: a carefully selected, designed, and assembled digital edition rather than a stream of disconnected web posts.

The website serves as the public home of the publication, the doorway into each issue, the submission desk, the archive, and the gathering place for the conversations that grow around the work.

The companion podcast will extend those conversations through readings, interviews, discussions, and explorations of the strange and unquiet places poetry continues to lead us.
